Summary
In New York Times bestselling author Lisa Kleypas's Dream Lake , readers well enter the world of Friday Harbor, an enchanting town in the Pacific Northwest where things are not quite as they seem and where true love might just have a ghost of a chance...
They say that opposites attract. But what happens when one of them has been devastated by betrayal and the other is so damaged and jaded that his heart is made of stone?
Alex Nolan is about as bitter and cynical as they come. One of three Nolan brothers who call Friday Harbor home, he's nothing like Sam or Mark. They actually believe in love; they think the risk of pain is worth the chance of happiness. But Alex battles his demons with the help of a whiskey bottle, and he lives in his own private hell. And then, a ghost shows up. Only Alex can see him. Has Alex finally crossed over the threshold to insanity?
Zoë Hoffman is as gentle and romantic as they come. When she meets the startlingly gorgeous Alex Nolan, all her instincts tell her to run. Even Alex tells her to run. But something in him calls to Zoë, and she forces him to take a look at his life with a clear eye and to open his mind to the possibility that love isn't for the foolish.
The ghost has been existing in the half-light of this world for decades. He doesn't know who he is, or why he is stuck in the Nolans' Victorian house. All he knows is that he loved a girl once. And Alex and Zoë hold the key to unlocking a mystery that keeps him trapped here.
Zoë and Alex are oil and water, fire and ice, sunshine and shadow. But sometimes it takes only a glimmer of light to chase away the dark, and sometimes love can reach beyond time, space, and reason to take hold of hearts that yearn for it...

The amnesiac ghost of a World War II pilot could be just what Alex Nolan needs. The third in Kleypas' (Rainshadow Road, 2012, etc.) Friday Harbor series follows the fortunes of the youngest Nolan brother. Emotionally starved by his alcoholic parents, Alex learned to trust no one. When his wife, Darcy, asks for a divorce, Alex doesn't even ask why, because, of course, it was only a matter of time before she realized the extent of the damage to him. The breakup coincides with a steep economic downturn, which torpedoes his real estate development project, driving Alex to seek comfort in a bottle of Jack Daniels every night. Erasing himself bit by bit, Alex nonetheless begins helping his brother, Sam, renovate a beautiful home on Rainshadow Road. The moment Ze Hoffman walks in the door with a plate of blueberry muffins, however, Alex realizes he is in trouble. Ze is the gorgeous chef at a local inn, and, like Alex, she has sworn off love after a heartbreaking divorce and years of being seen as nothing more than a pinup girl. Abandoned by her parents, Ze was raised by her loving grandmother, who will soon need round-the-clock assistance and a home with some serious renovations, which Alex could do well. Alex and Ze are clearly meant for each other and predictably try to deny their obvious attraction. Luckily, Alex has also met the ghost, who has lived in the old house for over 60 years. Yet the moment Alex sees him, the ghost becomes instantly anchored to him, an unwilling witness to Alex's alcoholic binges, an eager investigator of his own shadowy past and a believer in true love. Surprisingly, the ghost character works, allowing other magical events in the novel to seem less contrived. A little magic, a lot of romance and well-drawn characters make a satisfying read.]] Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.

In ordinary circumstances, Zoe wouldn't count on contractor Alex Nolan (who, rumor has it, is hitting the bottle, and hitting it hard) to give her the correct time of day. But she really has no choice if she wants to get her grandmother Emma's cottage renovated and ready for her before Emma leaves the hospital. Given her past disastrous romantic history, Zoe knows the smart thing to do is to keep as much distance as possible between her and her surly new contractor, but something about Alex strikes a chord within Zoe. Now Zoe isn't sure what is more frightening: the fact that she is beginning to empathize with Alex or that she might be falling in love with him.In Kleypas' latest Friday Harbor novel, a poignantly paranormal-tinged plot, exquisitely evoked Washington State setting, and two lonely and fragile protagonists who are given another shot at happily-ever-after add up to an unforgettable romance. Best-selling Kleypas proves that she has perfected her recipe for emotionally nourishing, richly rewarding love stories.--Charles, John Copyright 2010 Booklist
