Horn Book Review

Born-vampire Bianca (Evernight, Stargazer, Hourglass) and former vampire-hunter Lucas struggle with a new development in their ill-fated relationship: Lucas has become a vampire and Bianca a wraith. The now-undead couple returns to Evernight, but a scheme to restore vampires' humanity endangers Bianca. Though the prose remains overwrought, the pair's travails and triumphs are satisfying; Gray's world building is consistently strong. (c) Copyright 2011. In this final volume in the best-selling series that began with Evernight (2008), Gray once again blends teen vampire romance and boarding-school politics into a heart-pounding page-turner that begins the action in the first scene, set immediately after a blood-soaked, supernatural battle. As in the series' previous titles, the passionate bond between Bianca (now a ghostly wraith) and Lucas (now a vampire) forms the steamy center of the melodrama, right up to the metaphor-heavy conclusion, when the two become one being, each of us flowing into the other.
