Gr 7 Up-In this debut fantasy, 17-year-old orphan Kai struggles to earn credits that will help her rise above her station. Kai has a special ability, which the author chooses to reveal slowly-she can manipulate time. Reev is an older orphan boy who rescued Kai when she was eight years old and adopted her. They remain close, and it's this bond that drives Kai to search for Reev when he goes missing, even if it means getting caught up in a revolution. The suspense builds as Kai wrestles with her developing feelings for Avan, the shopkeeper's son. Jessica Almasy does an excellent job of portraying Kai, and her reading will have listeners rapt until the end. Teenage Kai and her adopted older brother, Reev, must work hard and look sharp as they navigate the dangerous neighborhoods that surround the stack of repurposed shipping containers where they make their home. Reev has taught Kai how to handle herself, but she has a secret weapon she can manipulate time. In Ninurta, technology and magic are closely intertwined and even more closely controlled by the ruler, Khal Ninu, who is rarely seen. Reev insists that Kai never use her gift lest the Khal get wind of it, but when Reev goes missing, she must use everything at her disposal to find and rescue him. Aided by her best friend, the handsome and inscrutable Avan, Kai leaves the city and tangles with forces both physical and magical.
