Booklist Review

According to old Asian folklore, soul mates are tied together by an unseeable red string. Teenage Chiyako, however, has had no problems seeing these strings, and earns her money as a matchmaker. Not everyone is pleased with her abilities and soon she finds herself threatened. That's only the beginning of the odd incidents happening to her. Next she is mysteriously transformed into the body of a child and she meets up with three onmyoji she believes are trying to kill her. Onmyoji are people trained in magical arts and divination, so if Chiyako doesn't end up on their hit list she may be in good company. Along with its unique storyline, Bound Beauty is intriguingly educational, delving into Japanese mythology, history and religion. There is much discussion of the Heian Period as well as Asian holidays and beliefs, with everything being explained in thorough Translation Notes at the end of the book. While being packaged as a fantasy story, Bound Beauty gives us a fascinating look at Japanese culture and mythology.--Davidson, Danica Copyright 2008 Booklist
