Newbery medalist Cynthia Voigt presents a rollicking mystery in three acts!
Max's parents are missing. They are actors, and thus unpredictable, but sailing away, leaving Max with only a cryptic note, is unusual even for them. Did they intend to leave him behind? Have they been kidnapped?
Until he can figure it out, Max feels it's safer to keep a low profile. Hiding out is no problem for a child of the theater. Max has played many roles, he can be whoever he needs to be to blend in. But finding a job is tricky, no matter what costume he dons.
Ironically, it turns out Max has a talent for finding things. He finds a runaway child, a stray dog, a missing heirloom, a lost love. . . . So is he a finder? A detective? No, it's more. Max finds a way to solve people's problems--he engineers better outcomes for them. He becomes Mister Max, Solutioneer.
Now if only he could find a solution to his own problems . . .
Author Notes
Cynthia Voigt was born on February 25, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts. She received a bachelor's degree from Smith College, did graduate work at St. Michael's College, and later received a teacher's certification from Christian Brothers College. After college, she worked for an advertising agency. Before becoming a full-time author, she was a secretary and a high school English teacher. Her first book, Homecoming, was published in 1981.
Her children's books address such issues at child abuse and racism, topics that are not often talked about in books designed for children. She is the author of numerous books including the Bad Girls series, the Tillerman Cycle series, and the Kingdom series. She won the Notable Children's Trade Book in the field of social studies for Homecoming, the Newbery Medal, ALA in 1983 for Dicey's Song, and the Edgar Allan Poe Award in 1984 for The Callender Papers. In 1995, she received the MAE Award.

Gr 5-8-Maximilian Starling is the only son of William and Mary, the proprietors of and star actors in the Starling Theater Company. When the postman delivers an unusual invitation from an Indian maharajah to perform Shakespeare in Bombay, his parents eagerly accept. Max travels to the seaside port to join them on the voyage, only to find they have both mysteriously disappeared, leaving just a cryptic note. Twelve-year-old Max goes to live with his Grammie, but decides that he's at a ripe age for independence.and a job. Luckily for Max, he discovers a hidden talent for finding things and formulating strategies to reach tidy solutions. He becomes Mister Max, Solutioneer-solver of problems. The first title (Knopf, 2013) in Voight's projected trilogy has an old-fashioned Encyclopedia Brown quality to it. This mystery, taking place in a port town during "the early years of the last century," is filled with descriptive language that lacks some of the adrenalin-laced appeal prevalent in today's tween novels. Intrigue, mystery, and lively characters color each chapter and tease listeners' sense of adventure. Unanswered questions remain at the end of the story. Paul Boehme's compelling narration adds richness to the plot and carries each chapter with the right emphasis and tone. A mysterious invitation to establish a theatrical troupe in India starts off the action in the first book in a trilogy from Newbery Medalist Voigt, set in the early 1900s. Max Starling's actor parents set sail (or do they?) for the new opportunity, accidentally (or not?) leaving him behind. Frightened and slightly hurt by their abandonment, yet determined to solve the mystery of their disappearance and maintain his independence, 12-year-old Max searches for income-earning opportunities and stumbles into detectivelike work-finding a lost dog, a missing antique silver spoon, and (secretly) reuniting two lost lovers. Max creates different characters for each of his missions, with appropriate costumes from his parents' trunks, and encounters the requisite eclectic characters, all well-drawn by Voigt. Max has a good heart and a sharp mind, with enough self-doubt to be credible, and his adventures, while not deeply suspenseful, build in complexity and develop Max's maturity; Voigt's accomplished writing draws readers into every aspect of his world. Max Starling, son of thespians William and Mary Starling, is looking forward to his family's trip to India to perform at the invitation of an enthusiastic maharaja. On the day of embarkation, however, he arrives at the dock to find his parents gone and no record of their ship. At first confounded (and more than a little worried that his parents have forgotten -- or even purposefully ditched -- him), Max soon rallies and vows to discover what happened to them. Determined to be independent, even from his librarian grandmother, Max looks for ways to support himself in the meantime, but no one is hiring until the day Max reunites a roaming toddler with his mother. The grateful woman not only pays him but recommends him to her friends, launching Max's career as a problem-solver and missing-object-finder, or, in his words, a "solutioneer." Max is a thoughtful and low-key hero, applying his analytical mind to problems not only involving missing heirlooms and family quarrels but also a dog's happiness and how to paint the wind. Although the parents' disappearance is underdeveloped, the entertaining and varied "solutioneering" episodes come together neatly at the climax. A final chapter gives Max his first solid lead in his parents' case, providing, at last, a launching point for what should be an exciting next volume in the projected trilogy. When Max's unpredictable actor parents leave home without him, he earns money by finding the lost things of others. But can he find his parents? In the first of a trilogy by Newbery winner Voigt, Maximilian Starling, son of theatrical parents, is left at the dock when he misses a boat to India, where his parents supposedly have been invited by a maharajah to start a theater. Did they intend to leave him? Are they in danger? Although his wise yet bossy librarian grandmother lives next door, 12-year-old Max wants to earn his keep and be independent. Cleverly donning the costumes and different roles performed by his missing parents, Max discovers an aptitude for finding lost things--lost lovers, a runaway child, a lost dog, a valuable spoon. He is a "solutioneer," solving people's problems. Voigt is a clever storyteller and wordsmith. The book is full of phrases to savor ("There was a lot of No in that Yes"). While the solutions may be obvious to readers, the satisfying way that Max solves each one is engaging. Highly detailed black-and-white illustrations nicely reflect the novel's setting at the beginning of the last century. An endearing, memorable protagonist and a clever plot make this a winner. In the early 1900s, 12-year-old Max arrives at the dock to join his parents for a voyage to India only to learn that they have already gone, leaving him a cryptic note. He confides in his grandmother, who encourages him to support himself until their return. After he finds a lost toddler and restores the boy to his mother, her friends hire Max to recover other things they have lost. Though baffled by the mystery of his parents' disappearance, Max discovers that he has a knack for solving other people's problems. The measured pace of the writing will not appeal to every reader, but the style suits the story's period. Voigt takes her time creating multifaceted characters and laying the groundwork for the next two volumes in the Mister Max trilogy, while the novel quietly builds a momentum of its own. The hint of lurking villainy is real, but even stronger is the sense that Max, his grandmother, and his friends will use their individual strengths to set things right. WITHIN 10 PAGES of beginning "Mister Max: The Book of Lost Things," the first volume in a new series by the Newbery Medal winner Cynthia Voigt, we recognize the familiar moves of what is, in no bad sense, a very familiar kind of story. Here is a colorful setting in a slightly burnished, early-modern past (as in "Hugo Cabret"); a mysterious invitation from an exotic source to propel the narrative (as in "Harry Potter"); and a preadolescent boy hero, with several eccentric friends and a single trusty, if grumpy, older person to consult (as in ... well, as in too many tales, old and new, to enumerate). In Voigt's hands, to be sure, none of these elements can fairly be called overfamiliar, much less clichéd, since the tale is rooted in the specificities of a fully felt and realized world: a late Victorian British seaside town where young Max's highly theatrical and hopelessly irresponsible parents, sweet variants on the Crummleses from "Nicholas Nickleby," are suddenly summoned by an Indian maharajah to perform Shakespeare for the monarch's pleasure. Max, loving but wary, goes to the port to join them on board the Flower of Kashmir, only to discover that no ship of that name exists, and that his parents have disappeared, leaving behind only a cryptic note. He retreats to his Grammie, the trusty old friend, as realistic as his parents are selffantasizing, and begins to make his way in the local world, and to find where it is in the larger one that his parents have been taken. By the end of the book, though he hasn't quite solved the mystery, he is proud to declare himself a professional "solutioneer." None of it feels exactly overfamiliar, but it does feel - the word comes with difficulty, since who does not value a book well and lightly made in an era of so many cynical, adrenaline-fueled entertainments? -just a touch dull. Max is from the beginning sufficiently detached from his parents to make their loss feel more strange than sinister, and though his struggle to find work is real and engaging, you feel that this is the kind of problem a bright kid will figure out, quickly, and he does. Max's ingenuity throughout is of a mostly quiet kind: a spoiled rich girl who neglects her dog is quietly tricked into trading it for an ant colony. Even the dangerous moments tend to deflation: Max is given a Celliniwrought spoon to find, a spoon that turns out to be both motive and MacGuffin. But the mystery of its disappearance is quickly and rather banally solved, and its worldly consequences in the town feel more like something from the juvenilia of Thomas Hardy than like a new chapter in magic semi-realism. Indeed, for the first 150 pages of "Mister Max," there are very few of what one of my young readers calls "cool bits" - no sword fights, sorcerer's shocks or almost any other active eventfulness. The smallness of incident, over chapter after chapter, turns out to be deliberate. Voigt, one realizes, is really writing something more quietly novelistic than fablelike in form. There are many lovely touches, and some very good jokes. The best of these is, perhaps, that Max disguises himself in costumes borrowed from his parents' repertory of hammy Victorian melodramas. He adopts the "humble voice of the Medical Man's Valet in 'The Caliph's Doctor"'; wears the "white scarf, slouched hat and long coat of the Royal Spy in 'The Queen's Man"'; and uses "just the voice the formerly rich and now terribly poor man used when he was offered only a third of the original price for his last remaining silver fork in 'A Miser Made Miserable.'" The charm, the quirkiness, the quiet originality of "The Book of Lost Things" are immensely appealing to those of us who love the classic possibilities and styles of children's literature. Yet the big question is whether this is what an 11-year-old I know calls, witheringly but honestly, "a grown-up's idea of a children's book" or a book that will actually appeal to children.
