Author Notes

Omar S. Castañeda (1954-1997) was born in Guatemala City and moved to the United States when he was a child. He was a teacher of creative writing at Western Washington University.

Enrique O. Sanchez has illustrated numerous award winning children's books, including Lee & Low's Abuela's Weave , Amelia's Road , and Confetti . A native of the Dominican Republic, he splits his time between his homes in Bass Harbor, Maine and Miami, Florida.

Horn Book Review

In this Spanish-language tale, Esperanza enjoys learning to weave at her grandmother's side, but she must go alone to the marketplace to try to sell their intricate tapestries, because her 'abuela' is afraid that the large birthmark on her face will frighten customers. Esperanza bravely finds a corner of the market, displays the beautiful weavings, and is able to sell them all.
