Author Notes

Corinne Mucha was born in New Jersey in 1983. She graduated from RISD with a degree in illustration in 2005. Her comics work includes the Xeric funded My Alaskan Summer , the Ignatz award winning the Monkey in the Basement and Other Delusions (Retrofit Comics) and the YA graphic novel Freshman: Tales of 9th Grade Obsessions, Revelations, and Other Nonsense (Zest Books). She lives in Chicago where she works as a cartoonist and teaching artist. As a child, she really believed that witches lived in her closet. Her overactive imagination continues to be a problem to this day.

Neil Sedaka got it wrong. It's not breaking up that's so hard to do. It's being broken-up-from that's really a bear. Mucha had been with Sam for two years. With their third anniversary looming, she asks him about their future. I want to get married someday, he says, just not to you. Ouch! Things plunge downhill after that. She cries buckets, feels inadequate, has a health crisis (he's last to visit her in the hospital), but she soon moves out and settles into dwelling on her misery. They keep seeing one another, trying to be good friends. Then he starts a serious new relationship, and . . . she gets over him, er, it. Such are the bare bones of the book, which Mucha clothes in wry, witty, and very cartoony cartooning, notably including monologues by and dialogues between her heart and her brain, rendered anatomically (except for their little faces, arms, and legs, that is). Mucha manages to make a very familiar subject simultaneously affecting and ludicrous, and always very human.
