Author Notes

Michael J. Rosen was born on Septembr 20, 1954 in Ohio. After getting his MFA in poetry, Rosen started work as a design consultant for the Jefferson Center for Learning and the Arts in 1982. In 1983, he became the literary director of the Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio. During his near-twenty-year stay as literary director, Rosen was the editor for several compilations of James Thurber's writings; he also was involved in the creation of the Thurber Prize for American Humor. Rosen has also "taught in the Ohio Art Council Poetry-in-the-Schools Program and Greater Columbus Arts Council Artist-in-the-Schools Program, and has conducted over 500 young authors' conferences, in-service days, writing workshops, guest author days, and residencies (for elementary, middle school, and high school students and teachers). He has acted as editor for Mirth of a Nation and 101 Damnations: The Humorists' Tour of Personal Hells, and his poetry has been featured in The Best American Poetry 1995.

Gr 3-5-These titles focus on things that are strange, silly, smelly, or just plain yucky, and they have enough trivia and facts to entertain readers for hours. Buildings includes cave homes, tree houses, and underground dwellings; it is fun and probably the most informative. Medical Cures includes leeches, chelation, and crystals; Foods includes yak-butter tea and assorted insects. While each spread covers more than one unusual food, home, or treatment, the entries are organized by topic. The authors' approach and use of language is easygoing and often tongue-in-cheek. They are not going for extremes or to shocking; the tone is fairly matter-of-fact. They highlight "just the facts" while fully acknowledging the gross-out factor. Buildings could easily support an architecture unit with its creativity and mix of art, sculpture, and construction. Medical Cures points out some less-than-standard treatments, including sutra neti (you pass a string from nostril to mouth). Foods is straightforward, admiting that eating a Sardinian cheese intentionally filled with maggots has its challenges. Horn Book Review

More suitable for browsing than research, this book's brief, superficial descriptions of unconventionally shaped buildings that appear to float, lean, or climb trees are each accompanied by one or two photos and a cartoony illustration. This breezy treatment may whet appetites, but the information isn't likely to satisfy architecture or engineering enthusiasts. The jokey tone grows tedious. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind.
