Gr 3-8-Well-written and well-organized, these books seek to identify specific types of traditional literature and to analyze their characteristics in a methodical manner. Though each title suggests a possible guidebook for oral presentations, the word "tell" here simply means "understand." There are no tools here for would-be storytellers; instead, the focus is on how to read, comprehend, and try one's hand at writing an original story in the given style. Each book begins with a clear definition of the genre and proceeds to a nicely illustrated story that probes such literary elements as character, dialogue, dialect, setting, plot, and theme. Attractive graphic elements such as text boxes, bullet lists, and story maps help to highlight the kinds of textual evidence that today's students are frequently asked to provide, especially when taking tests. A second story is included, followed by related activities and step-by-step directions for creative writing. Perfect for genre studies, these books will be popular with teachers, and they are attractive and accessible for student reports.
