Summary:
Meet the mob of kangaroos moving into Australia's capital city and the ecologists following their every move. After 15 years of drought, Canberra's kangaroos have learned that parks, gardens, and private lawns are a reliable source of juicy grass, but it comes at a price. The life of an urban kangaroo is not easy. It requires learning to negotiate busy roads and avoiding cars and dogs. Over the course of one drought-stricken year, we follow mob leader Black Spot and kangaroo mom Madge as she tries to teach her two young joeys -- mischievous Sonny and tiny pouch-bound Alice -- the skills they will need to make it in the big city. But when the city announces a cull to control the growing numbers of kangaroos, their lives are in serious danger. Public opinion is polarized -- are the kangaroos pests that need to be eradicated, or a protected national icon to be saved at all costs? A local wildlife sanctuary promotes rehabilitation and release as a solution to the problem. And a team of government ecologists hopes to provide some answers with a 12-month study using GPS to track the mob's movements. Here is a look at what happens when human development encroaches on wildlife habitat and two very different species are forced to co-exist.
