A mother bear tells her cub (and readers) a different story for each day of December in The Advent Storybook: 24 Stories to Share Before Christmas by Antonie Schneider, illus. by Maja Dus!kov , from "The Star with a Tail" (on Dec. 1) to the place it leads, "The Manger," on Christmas Eve. Horn Book Review
Before Christmas, a bear tells her cub twenty-four stories (one for each door in the Advent calendar) of a bear journeying to Bethlehem. The brief stories and soft paintings convey some of the Christmas traditions o? western Europe, but with its heavy load of symbolism and religious lessons, the book feels much too slow. Kirkus Review
A short story for each of the days of December leading up to Christmas is the premise for this charming collection of related tales told by Mother Bear to her son, Benjamin Bear. Benjamin has an Advent calendar and each night, he opens one door on the calendar and his mother tells him a little story related to the picture inside. Each story is about an unnamed little bear (who has different coloring from Benjamin), shown in the large illustrations facing each story. Some of the stories are about values, others have a religious slant and one is about Santa. At the end of each one, Mother Bear points out some aspect of the story that relates to their family's faith or to positive virtues that she wants her son to notice. In the last story, for December 24, all the characters encountered in the previous stories join the little bear outside the stable of the Nativity scene. The individual short stories with a gentle lesson will be easily understood by young children and could be used by families for Advent or in Sunday-school programs.
