Horn Book Review
With a little girl named Rebecca, a young donkey journeys from Nazareth to Bethlehem to be reunited with its mother and witnesses the miracle of baby Jesus. Much of the opulence of the showy, gilded illustrations is lost in this miniature edition of the quiet story. From HORN BOOK 1993, (c) Copyright 2010. Kirkus Review
From a noted British illustrator who has long been a popular favorite, one of the most beautiful books he has done in quite a while. The unexceptional text here focuses on a little donkey--who is left behind when his mother carries the Holy Family to Bethlehem--and the neighbor girl, Rebecca, who sets out with him to find them. But the rich, dark colors, the delightful Wildsmith details (including a little tiger cat who tags along on the journey), and the unusual effects he produces with the addition of bright gold--in the stars, the angel, and even the city of Jerusalem--will appeal to a broad audience. It does seem odd, in illustrations that clearly derive inspiration from the appearance of the real Holy Land, to show both Rebecca and Mary (inconsistently) as blonde; but perhaps that license should be as forgivable as the swirling, starry snow. Regardless, this is sure to be a favorite gift book for the coming holidays. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
