Summary

Going camping sounds great to Bailey. But he's too young to join his Bunny Scout brother and sister--so Mama and Papa show him him to camp right at home.

Kids stuck at home for whatever reason will relate to Bailey, and parents will smile at the successful improvised solution created by his loving parents.

"You're too little" and "You can go in a few years" are no fun to hear. No wonder Bailey cries "It's not fair!" Good thing Bailey and his parents find a way to make a tough situation fun after all.

Author Notes

Kevin Henkes was born in Racine, Wis. in 1960 and graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. One of four children in his family, Henkes grew up with aspirations of being an artist. As a junior in high school, one of Henkes's teachers awakened his interest in writing. Falling in love with both writing and drawing, Henkes realized that he could do both at the same time as a children's book author and illustrator.

At the age of 19, Henkes went to New York City to get his first book, All Alone, published. Since that time, he has written and illustrated dozens of picture books including Chrysanthemum, Protecting Marie, and A Weekend with Wendell. A recurring character in several of Henkes's books is Lily, an outrageous, yet delightful, individualist. Lily finds herself the center of attention in the books Chester's Way, Julius, the Baby of the World, and Lily's Purple Plastic Purse.

A Weekend With Wendell was named Children's Choice Book by the Children's Book Council in 1986. He recieved the Elizabeth Burr Award for Words of Stone in 1993. Owen was named a Caldicott Honor in 1994. The Year of Billy Miller was named a Newbery Honor book in 2014.

PreS-K-Bailey wants to go camping with his older brother and sister who are both Bunny Scouts. He wants to eat hot dogs, live in a tent, tell ghost stories, and fall asleep under the stars. Though his parents try to console him with other activities, nothing works until they create a special day of camping just for him. He spends the day under a blanket tent in the living room, eats hot dogs and roasts marshmallows in the kitchen, and swims and goes fishing in the bathtub. After going on a bear hunt and telling ghost stories to his parents, Bailey falls asleep in his own bed under his starry blanket. Katherine Kellgren narrates Kevin Henkes' story (Greenwillow, 1985) in a nicely modulated voice. Pleasant music and aptly chosen sound effects highlight this happy production. Page-turn signals are optional.
