School Library Journal Review
PreS-Spending time with Nellie is a simple affair. She gets up, dresses, eats, plays, naps, has a picnic, plays some more, takes a bath, eats supper, and goes to bed. The straightforward text subtly introduces numbers, colors, the alphabet, and other concepts, with some questions thrown in to make the story interactive. Jocelyn's charming, intricate collages magically turn cloth, buttons, and other materials into lively, colorful, multidimensional scenes. Children will enjoy the pictures and relate to this day in the life of a typical preschooler.-Be Astengo, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL (c) Copyright 2010. Kirkus Review
Busy Nellie wakes up in a tangle of blankets ready to start a full day. First on the agenda is deciding on the appropriate attire. Every type of clothing presents itself and Nellie selects an outfit. Breakfast is next and, for Nellie, it's an introduction to textures as well as food: "crispy cereal o's, squishy egg, crunchy toast fingers." Pausing briefly in her busy schedule, she takes a moment to say hello to her friends. Directions such as out, in, on, and under are illustrated as Nellie goes about her morning playing. "Nellie gets tired . . . cranky . . . stubborn . . . mad!" It's definitely time for a nap. Lunchtime follows and the quick bite is a good excuse to do some counting: "3 baby carrots, 4 cookies, and 24 ants." The afternoon is filled with colors and the alphabet with one final nod to cause and effect with the introduction of mud and soap. A quick dinner and a story with Daddy finish off this busy toddler's day and then it's time for bed. Bright, crisp, multimedia collages are at once simple and effective at conveying the quick lessons on every page. Visually stimulating and interesting, readers will get a taste of many concepts and terms as they spend a day with Nellie. Fast, clever, and fun. (Picture book. 2-5)
Booklist Review
PreS^-Gr. 1. Jocelyn, who treated children to an ingenious story wrapped around collections in Hannah's Collections (2000), now offers a new book that is both delightfully child-friendly and practical enough to get kids thinking. Kids are invited to spend a day with Nellie as she gets dressed, has a picnic, plays with toys, becomes tired and cranky, and then revives after a nap--activities very familiar to children. In fact, the charming collage artwork will inspire kids to think about their own days as they name Nellie's friends (her stuffed animals, her quilted blankie); point out the letters of the alphabet as Nellie plays teacher; and identify the bath items at tub time (washcloth, sponge, rubber ducky, etc.). There are so many things to see and so many different objects (cloth, paper, buttons, felt, and pasta, among other things) used to make the pictures that numerous readings will be guaranteed. --Ilene Cooper
