Gerard Way is the Eisner Award-winning writer of The Umbrella Academy and the comic miniseries The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys . He is the creative mind behind the new grassroots imprint DC's Young Animal, whose retro-inspired lineup bridges the gap between the DC Universe and Vertigo. Way is also widely known for his former role as the lead vocalist and co-founder of the alternative rock band My Chemical Romance.

Booklist Review

No one would suspect Violet Paige, scandal-prone Gotham City socialite, to have a selfless bone in her body, but like another notoriously wealthy Gotham resident, she spends her off-hours dressed in a special suit and fighting injustice as Mother Panic. Though her tough exterior suggests she lacks compassion, her first mission involves rescuing a group of children held hostage by a sadistic artist, and in her secret lair, she cares for her addled mother. A later story line about her troubling origins gives the character intriguing motivation. Occasionally the plot gets a bit muddled, but readers who stick with it will be treated to some fantastic art and a compelling heroine. Full of shadowy, saturated colors and thick, black lines, Edwards and Crystal's panels are jam-packed with enigmatic imagery, which hints at Violet's backstory, and the freewheeling sense of movement and swooping angles of perspective give the pages a dynamic, cinematic quality. Violet's bitterness, long-buried secrets, and tightrope walk between bravery and recklessness make this a nice fit for fans of Greg Rucka's Batwoman: Elegy (2010).--Hunter, Sarah Copyright 2017 Booklist
