Bursting with colorful movie posters, film stills, and publicity shots, all this large-format guidebook lacks is some choreography and a soundtrack. Bollywood a term that combines Bombay and Hollywood and was first used in the 1970s refers to India's Hindi film industry, which dates back to 1913 and would surpass Hollywood as the world's biggest film producer 60 years later. This celebration of Indian cinema consists of a decade-by-decade survey highlighting iconic films, directors, and performers. Each film is covered in a one- or two-page spread which includes a plot summary, a list of cast and crew, and a list of hit songs. A comprehensive alphabetical index facilitates access to individual names, film titles, and topics. Although most Western film fans won't be familiar with these films and their creators and stars, many will recognize at least two names, those of actor Priyanka Chopra of the television show Quantico and two-time Academy Award-winning composer A. What is Bollywood? According to this book's introduction, the term combines the words Bombay and Hollywood and refers to Hindi cinema. This gorgeous volume is not an encyclopedia but instead a " celebration of.more than a century of artistry and innovation in Indian cinema." Spanning 1913 to the present, eras such as "The Golden Age 1951-60" are accentuated with beautiful color photographs. Films and major figures are discussed by multiple contributors. -Dadasaheb Phalke, the "father of Indian cinema," and Devika Rani, "first lady of the Indian screen" are highlighted with time lines and their key works. Kismet (1943) and other films are featured with an inset of cast and crew and a spread on their story lines. Other aspects of production (foreign locales) and themes (Master of Music) are also covered. This overview of Bollywood provides an intriguing introduction to the genre and many films to discover. VERDICT Public libraries should offer works on this topic, and academic libraries will want this as part of their cinema history collections.
