Maria Dahvana Headley is a New York Times bestselling author. She is the author of The Year of Yes which has been translated into Korean, German, Dutch, Italian, Hebrew, and Chinese. Headley's title The End of the Sentence, co-written with Kat Howard, published by Subterranean Press in September 2014 was named one of NPR's Best Books of 2014. Her title Give Her Honey When You Hear Her Scream was published by Lightspeed Magazine in 2012, and was a Nebula Award finalist in the short story category. Her New York Times best-selling title, Magonia, also garnered a starred review in Publisher's Weekly in February, 2015.

A year after she died and discovered her nonhuman origins, Aza is drawn back into the conflicts between Earth and Magonia (Magonia, 2015).Aza Ray Boyle had once been a white girl, dying since she was a toddler. When she died, she discovered she was truly indigo-skinned Aza Ray Quel, daughter of pirate Capt. Quel of Magonia. There, where the sky people control the weather, bird folk steer sailing ships amid squallwhales and stormsharks. Aza's returned to Earth in the (soon-to-be-shed) borrowed skin of a black girl, disguised as an exchange student and dating her real boyfriend, Jason. Their peaceful year concludes when Jasonconcerned by reports that a Magonian assassin is after Azagoes full stalker and turns her in to a creepy government agency for her own protection. Biracial (black/white) Jason, who has an OCDlike disability, soon regrets his decision, but when he tries to enlist his mothers' help, they fear for his sanity and have him institutionalized. Alternating Aza and Jason chapters have lovely, lyrical, and nigh-indistinguishable voices (Jason says he's "turned inside out, a sweater tugged over a head and unraveled into yarn"; Aza calls herself "flat origami, all the folds crushed in on themselves"). This is pure science fantasy in a mishmash magical world, absent the character realism that opened Book 1, but itll keep readers moving. In the follow-up to Magonia (2015), Aza Ray has returned to Earth from the sky kingdom of Magonia and is finally with her boyfriend, Jason. But their reunion is cut short when Aza's radical mother, Zal, escapes from prison. A secret agency kidnaps Aza, pulling her back into the war raging on Magonia, to help them locate the Flock, a legendary weapon that can destroy Zal. Most of the story's action revolves around Aza developing her powers by singing with her heartbird, a birdlike creature of Magonia, but this plot device can be hard to follow as more layers of strange magic are added. While a sequel, enough plot is recapped to allow new readers to join in here, though even established fans may find Aerie's world building and plot confusing. Despite choppy transitions between Aza's and Jason's points of view, there are moments of beautiful, lush writing that will please readers wishing to revel in Aza's bird-filled sky.
