Summary
Summary
No one understands the heart of a family better than Luanne Rice. Her luminous novels capture the mystery and miracle of love in all its guises. Now, on the heels of her triumphant New York Times bestseller Cloud Nine, Luanne Rice draws us into the sweeping, unforgettable story of a family's search for hope, faith, and love to bridge the years that have held them apart. Jewelry maker Daisy Tucker's remarkable talent has earned her a devoted, growing clientele. Her necklaces and bracelets are fashioned of polished stone and delicately etched bone, crafted into pieces inspired by family stories, myths, and Native American lore. But it is not just because of its unique beauty that her jewelry is prized -- word has spread that Daisy's creations bring love into the lives of those who wear them. Once, years ago, Daisy's work had brought love into her own life. Just out of college, she had traveled to the wilderness of Wyoming's Wind River Mountains in search of inspiration for her art. What she found was rancher James Tucker, a man with the wilderness inside him. Their life together was as close to paradise as a family could get -- until the day their three-year-old son, Jake, disappeared without a trace in the wild country they both had loved. Her heart broken, her marriage in tatters, Daisy returned home to Connecticut with Jake's twin sister, Sage. Wyoming had taken everything from her but her livelihood. Now, thirteen years later, Wyoming wants more. Sixteen-year-old Sage, whose bedroom walls are covered with posters of the West, is on a dangerous pilgrimage across a vast continent to a father she has longed for but lived without for most of her life. Sage's thirst to see the land and father of her dreams, and learn more about her lost twin, is driving her westward on freight trains and farm roads. Daisy, terrified, flies out to where it all began, to where James Tucker now rides the range with a heart turned to stone, still scouring the canyons for Jake. Still wary of each other, Daisy and James wait and pray for Sage's safe arrival. As Daisy pours her sorrow and hope into new talismans of love's magic and healing, she will need all the strength and wisdom she can find to learn that you cannot close the door on the past, but sometimes, if you step through it, it can lead you home. Played out against a timeless landscape of transcendent beauty, Dream Country is Luanne Rice's greatest achievement yet. At once a haunting love story, a gripping mystery, and a mesmerizing family saga, it will break your heart and mend it again

Publisher's Weekly Review
A compelling plot and nuanced character portrayals contribute to the emotional impact of Rice's ninth novel, a transcendent story about the power of hope and family love. Daisy Tucker has built a comfortable life with her 16-year-old daughter, Sage, in Silver Bay, Conn., where she has gained a reputation for designing jewelry that seems to have inspirational powers. Combining artistry with her knowledge of Native American myths and legends, Daisy creates pieces that bring people together, heal wounds and serve as talismans. But no combination of gemstones and carved animal bones can assuage the pain in Daisy's life. Sage's twin brother, Jake, disappeared in the wild country of Wyoming during a cattle roundup 13 years ago, when he was three. Fleeing the scene of tragedy with her daughter, Daisy left her husband, James, behind at his family cattle ranch and moved to New England to be close to her sister, Hathaway. Now Daisy faces another crisis when a pregnant Sage runs away with her boyfriend, Ben, intent on a new life with her father at the ranch. Ben has second thoughts and decides to return home, so Sage heads on alone. Hitchhiking leads to danger, and a mysterious, tattooed teenager rescues Sage and agrees to drive her to Wyoming. Daisy joins James in Wyoming, where another teenager, calling himself "The Guardian," is stalking the ranch. Rice (Cloud Nine) creates believable dramatic tension about Jake's true fate, though the suspense lies mainly in whether the other characters will realize what has become of him. Though she overdoes the sentimentality, her fans always welcome the family values her stories celebrate. Author tour. (Jan. 30) Forecast: Among writers of women's fiction, Rice has a loyal following based on her ability to place realistic characters in atmospheric backgrounds and crisis situations. Cloud Nine became a bestseller in paperback, and its popularity could carry over to sales of this novel, which will enjoy national TV advertising on the Lifetime network and print advertising in a variety of venues. Kirkus Review
Rice (Follow the Stars Home, 1999, etc.) returns with yet another saccharine celebration of the family ties that holdeven through a childs disappearance, a teenagers pregnancy, and a disturbed mans vengeance. Beneath all the sentimental effusions on nature, love, and Native Americans, remnants of Rices original writing talent remainsher descriptions of place can be excellent, though too often lost in the numerous clunkers and clichés: Being scared of everything makes some people brave; she wished she could fly herself, lower than any plane, looking in every corner for her missing daughter. Thirteen years ago, when her son Jake disappeared, Daisy Tucker fled east with his twin sister Sage, leaving behind husband James and a ranch in Wyoming. Time passes. Fearful of losing Sage, Daisy has forbidden her to visit her father, but when the girl, now 16 and pregnant, runs away, her mother realizes she must go back and face James, the ranch, and their long-ago history. As Sage heads west, shes saved from a sexual assault by a strange, gentle boy covered with unusual tattoos who drives a car filled with dogs and cats hes rescued. He calls himself David, but Sage becomes convinced that he could be her long-lost brother. Back on the ranch, cattle are being cruelly slaughtered, their heads left as ominous warnings, and James learns that someone is hiding out in one of the caves lining the canyon wall. Though long divorced, Daisy and James still find themselves mutually attracted; waiting together as they do for Sage to arrive, fearful of losing their only remaining child, they grow closer. Protected by the spirits of the ancients and imbued with loving hearts, the Tucker family will be strong for the ensuing heartbreaks, revelations, and obligatory soft-focus fade into happiness. Too warm, too fuzzy, and way too sweet.
Booklist Review
The love between jewelry maker Daisy and her husband, rancher James Tucker, seemed so strong that James' father called them snow geese after the birds who mate for life. But love was not enough to keep them together after Jake, one of their three-year-old twins, disappeared during a roundup. Thirteen years after their divorce, Daisy returns to Wyoming after their pregnant daughter, Sage, ran away from her home on the East Coast, heading for the ranch. Along the route, Sage is rescued from a pervert intent on rape by a tattooed young man, who also rescues dogs from puppy mills and kittens from predators. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, a psycho called the "Guardian" is mutilating cattle and plotting against the Tuckers. Will James and Daisy reconcile? Will Sage arrive safely? Will James' dad make an honest woman out of his live-in lover of 28 years? Is Jake still alive? Best-selling author Rice once again delivers a wonderfully complex and full-bodied romance, this time working in some Joy Fielding^-like suspense. Sage's cross-country coming-of-age tale, the Tucker patriarch's advancing frailty, and the vividly depicted Wyoming Wind River Mountain landscape combine with the difficulties faced by two adults who need to learn to love again to create a story so real it will be deeply etched into the hearts of its readers. --Diana Tixier Herald
