Summary

When Maisy and friends have a special day for races and competitions, it's not about winning or losing -- the fun is in playing the games.

Join Maisy and her pals for Field Day! First is the egg-and-spoon race (oops, Eddie's egg is a little too wobbly). No problem, there are lots more games to play -- a wheelbarrow race, a three-legged race, and even a get-dressed-up-silly race. When it's time to play ringtoss, Eddie's trunk comes in handy, and in the relay race, Maisy and Charley run as fast as they can. Last of all comes a great big game of tug-of-war, where both teams fall down laughing at the end!

Author Notes

English children's book author/illustrator Lucy Cousins was born on February 10, 1964. She studied at Canterbury College, received a BA Honours in Graphic Design from The Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Brighton Polytechnic, and earned a postgraduate degree from the Royal College of Art.

Cousins is best known for creating the popular Maisy mouse character for preschool children. Her first book was published not long after she finished college, and Maisy even has her own successful television show.

Toddler-PreS-Preschoolers' favorite mouse participates in her first field day at school. Maisy and her friends split into the red and the blue teams. They warm up and compete in a variety of outdoor races. After a snack, they finish with a game of tug-of-war, and Maisy's team wins. The friends express concerns that children will empathize with, like wanting to win and needing a break. Cousins's cartoon illustrations are as recognizable as ever, with thick, black outlines and bright, primary colors depicting Maisy and her friends in gym shorts, sneakers, and sweatbands. Maisy the little mouse and her animal friends enjoy a field day. Divided into the blue team and the red team, they warm up and stretch out together before competing in events such as the Hula-Hoop contest, the sack race, and the ring toss. Maisy cheers up Eddie the elephant after his egg-and-spoon race ends abruptly with a wobble and a broken egg. After a snack and a tug-of-war, field day ends with medals and ribbons for all. From the Maisy First Experiences book series, this colorful picture book acknowledges that individuals really want to win, though even when the characters lose, they look happy to be taking part in the races and games. Defined by thick black lines filled in with colors, the cheerful, dressed animal characters show up brilliantly against the solid blue, green, yellow, orange, and white backgrounds.
