School Library Journal Review
Gr 5-8-Beginning where The Goblin Wood (HarperCollins, 2003) ended, this story immediately throws readers into the conflict between the sorceress Makenna and her goblin band and the forces of the Hierarch, led by Master Lazur, a priest of the Realm of the Bright Gods. To escape certain death Makenna, the goblins, and the young knight Tobin fling themselves through a magical gate into the Otherworld. It soon becomes clear that there is something not quite right about the Otherworld and a plan to leave it is desperately sought. At the same time, Tobin's young brother Jeriah learns that the Otherworld is deadly to humans and that Tobin has only a short time to live if he remains there. Master Lazur has the spells to recast the Gate, but will not divulge their hiding place. Jeriah vows to find them and save his brother and in the process uncovers an incredible years-old conspiracy. Whew! The nuances of politics and the nature of good and evil are well explored in this fantasy sequel. Through Jeriah's eyes, readers learn that immense wrongs are often committed to achieve a greater good. However, this book does not stand on its own; in order to appreciate the action and intrigue, readers must be acquainted with the characters and backstory.-Sharon Grover, Hedberg Public Library, Janesville, WI (c) Copyright 2010. Horn Book Review
This sequel to The Goblin Wood (rev. 5/03) continues the story of magic straitened by politics and of politics warped by the pressure of an incipient barbarian invasion. From the moment Jeriah of Rovanscourt watches his brother Tobin disappear through a gate into the otherworld in the company of a sorceress and an army of goblins, all he can think about is reopening the gate and getting his brother out. To do that, Jeriah will need experimental spell notes from Master Lazur, a priest of the Hierarch, so he makes a deal with the remaining goblins: they'll find the spell notes, hidden in the Hierarch's palace, if Jeriah gets the Decree of Bright Magic revoked so that goblins are no longer hunted as vermin. Inside the palace, Jeriah, posted as the Hierarch's squire, discovers that Master Lazur's power comes from a deeply held secret: the Hierarch's mind is gone, and Master Lazur has been covering for him. Author Bell has long shown herself adept in portraying social systems and political intrigues; here that talent is married to sympathetic characters struggling through challenges both external and internal. A transitional volume between the series anchor and future installments, this book comes to a satisfying conclusion but leaves the engine running for book three. anita l. burkam (c) Copyright 2010. Kirkus Review
Goblin Wood, 2003), Makenna and Tobin, having escaped with a group of goblins to the Otherworld, set about building a new community for the goblins. Jeriah, having discovered that the Otherworld will kill his brother, prowls through church headquarters searching for spells to bring him back.Alternating chapters describe Makenna and Tobin's progress in the Otherworld and Jeriah's hide-and-seek in the City of Steps. Suspense is almost painful--deteriorating conditions in the Otherworld cut back and forth to the byzantine religious and political conditions Jeriah confronts. The plot is intricate and the back story skillfully integrated, and Jeriah proves a stronger character than was indicated in the first book. His new acquaintances include a strong female clerk and a contrary goblin, who combine to add a mordant humor and sparkle to the increasing darkness of the two worlds. The classic cliffhanger ending promises another sequel--sooner this time, please. Fantasy readers, male and female alike, will gobble this book up, as will fans of Bell's other books and readers of Herbie Brennan's Faerie Wars series.(Fantasy.
