Summary
Summary
Notorious Lives is an entirely new publication continuing Salem's ""Great Lives from History"" series, offering more than 600 essays focusing on historically significant personages considered ""notorious."" The definition of that term ranges from controversial to extremely negative and extends from ancient times to the present. There is an emphasis on their roles in historical events or their impact on law enforcement, politics, criminology, or popular culture. The focus of ""Notorious Lives"" is not on glorifying the individuals or their deeds but, rather, documenting their vital data, offenses, and sociohistorical impact for students of history, politics, criminal law, sociology, psychology, and related disciplines. The scope of coverage includes ancient times to the present, worldwide, with an emphasis on North America and the West, and including figures as diverse as Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, Idi Amin, Ted Bundy, and Osama Bin Laden. The set covers such disperate figures as dictator Adolf Hitler and convicted murderer Aileen Wuornos. Controversial figures - from Mao Zedong to Richard Nixon - are also included. Legendary figures, from Salome to Robin Hood, are also addressed. Personages covered are remembered not just for their infamy but also for their key historical roles. Every essay offers a biographical sketch followed by an assessment of the individual's ""Impact,"" analyzing the individual's historical role or influence influence on politics, law and law enforcement, criminal justice, public attitudes, social reform - even legend and the arts. The set therefore documents the figures who played a role in historical events, not generally covered elsewhere or from this perspective. The vast majority of individuals covered in this publication are not covered elsewhere in Salem's publications or databases. Each essay ranges from 700 to 1,200 words (roughly 1 to 3 pages) and displays standard ready-reference top matter offering easy access to biographical information including the name of the individual as it is best known; the individual's identity, including reign dates or terms of office where appropriate; a summary paragraph highlighting the individual's historical importance; the ""Born"" and ""Died"" lines list the most complete dates of birth and death available, followed by the most precise locations available. ""Also known as"" lists all known versions of the individual's name; ""Cause of notoriety"" (or, for criminals, ""Major offenses"") summarizes the reasons for the person's infamy; ""Active"" lists the date or range of years when the individual gained notoriety; ""Locale"" identifies the place or places where the individual was most active; and ""Sentence"" appears where legal action led to a conviction and sentencing. ""Early Life"" covers background and youth; ""Career"" addresses adulthood and notorious acts; ""Legal Action"" identifies legal response, trials, and sentencing; and the key ""Impact"" section indicates the person's influence on politics, law enforcement, history, or popular culture. It includes: 3 Volumes; 1,575 Pages; 200+ Sidebars; 200+ Photos; 600+ Bios; Pronunciation Guide; Bibliography; Cross-References; Chronological List of Entries; Websites; Geographical Index; Category Index; and Personages Index.

Gr 5 Up-From ancients (Jezebel, born ninth century B.C.E.) to more recent miscreants such as Lee Boyd Malvo (one of the 2002 Washington, DC, snipers), this set spotlights individuals whose offenses or negative actions have had a historical impact. Each of the 637 signed biographies begins with basic vital statistics: birth and death dates, the source of the subject's notoriety and its dates and geographic locale; and subsequent sentencing, when applicable. Following these brief facts are one- to three-page essays profiling the individuals' early lives; their criminal, political, or military careers; any legal action or outcomes; and their significance or impact on law, history, society, or culture. Each well-written essay maintains a factual tone and includes references to further reading. Some of the entries are accompanied by sidebar excerpts from letters, documents, or articles that offer a view into the person or enhance understanding of his or her historical or social impact. Ample avenues of access are provided through category, geography, and personage indexes.-Linda Ward-Callaghan, Joliet Public Library, IL (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review
"Serial killers, con artists, outlaws, and war criminals fascinate readers. Part of the Great Lives from History series, these volumes cover figures from the ancient world to modern times whose lives, although considered negative in the main, nevertheless had historic impact. Some 637 alphabetically arranged entries list basic biographical information, aliases, and notorious activities and briefly describe life history, careers both legitimate and notorious, any legal action that might have been brought, and impact. Each essay includes a short annotated reading list for further information, and most have a black-and-white picture of the individual. More than 200 sidebars provide additional information. An especially nice feature is a phonetic pronunciation key for subjects' first and last names. Each volume has a complete list of the contents of all three volumes, with page numbers. The third volume includes three appendixes: a Chronological List of Entries, a 46-page bibliography, and an annotated list of electronic resources. The indexes are very useful, especially the Category Index, which groups names by 24 categories such as Assassins, Biblical Villains, Dictators, and Pirates. A Geographical Index gives countries of origin, with the U.S. predominating. The final index is a list of Personages, which provides names mentioned in the essays with page numbers as well as alternative spellings and aliases. The figures one would expect are here, including Adolph Hitler and all of his Nazi henchmen; outlaws, such as Jesse James; and serial killers Ted Bundy and Richard Speck. Also covered are current figures, such as Scott Peterson and Andrea Yates. Politics is well represented by Richard Nixon and all the major Watergate figures, among others. A number of women are profiled, among them Lizzie Borden, Eva Braun, and 11 Witches and Occultists. In a few cases, entries are for groups rather than individuals. This work is a delight to browse as well as being an excellent reference resource. The scope and depth of coverage make it a valuable resource for not just biographies but for criminal justice and popular culture as well. Recommended for public and college libraries."--"Landry, Abbie" Copyright 2007 Booklist
Library Journal Review
This latest entry in Salem's "Great Lives" series is made up of 637 essays by 248 scholars presenting the backstories of historically infamous figures, from ancient times to the present and worldwide, with an emphasis on North America and the West. Editor Bankston (Blue Collar Bayou) does not dwell on murderers and tyrants alone; nor does he focus solely on the familiar and eminent. Among the 24 thematic groupings are biblical villains, notorious popes, and corrupt politicians. At least three "further reading" titles follow each entry, and relevant names are suggested for cross reference. Expansive and fact-laden entries offer an excellent springboard to advanced research. A straightforward series recommended for historical and criminological collections. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
