Author Notes

Kevin Henkes was born in Racine, Wis. in 1960 and graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. One of four children in his family, Henkes grew up with aspirations of being an artist. As a junior in high school, one of Henkes's teachers awakened his interest in writing. Falling in love with both writing and drawing, Henkes realized that he could do both at the same time as a children's book author and illustrator.

At the age of 19, Henkes went to New York City to get his first book, All Alone, published. Since that time, he has written and illustrated dozens of picture books including Chrysanthemum, Protecting Marie, and A Weekend with Wendell. A recurring character in several of Henkes's books is Lily, an outrageous, yet delightful, individualist. Lily finds herself the center of attention in the books Chester's Way, Julius, the Baby of the World, and Lily's Purple Plastic Purse.

A Weekend With Wendell was named Children's Choice Book by the Children's Book Council in 1986. He recieved the Elizabeth Burr Award for Words of Stone in 1993. Owen was named a Caldicott Honor in 1994. The Year of Billy Miller was named a Newbery Honor book in 2014.

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 3-Laura Hamilton does a wonderful job in this reading of Kevin Henkes' popular book (Greenwillow, 1987). Sheila Rae's self-proclaimed bravery is nowhere to be found when she finds herself lost on the way home from school one day. In an act of sibling-love, her little "scaredy-cat" sister helps out and saves the day. Appropriate sound effects are liberally infused in the recording, along with an occasional musical interlude, heightening the feelings of fear, helplessness, and finally triumph that listeners will feel right along with Sheila Rae. Henkes' gift for writing and illustrating is nicely complemented by this recording. Wonderful for read-alongs (especially for little sisters!), this title will be useful for emergent readers as well as general listening.-Kirsten Martindale, Buford Academy, GA (c) Copyright 2010. Ages 4-6. Sheila Rae, a little mouse girl, prides herself on her fearlessness. The dark? She sleeps right through it. A boy in the schoolyard steals her jump rope? She hog-ties him with it. Thunder, lightning, riding a bike with no hands nothing fazes Sheila Rae. Her little sister, Louise, is in awe. But when Sheila Rae decides to take an unfamiliar route home, suddenly she doesn't feel quite so brave and begins to cry. Happily, Louise, who has followed her, does know the way. Now it's the younger sister who walks backward with her eyes closed and growls at stray dogs. Graciously, Sheila Rae tells Louise, `` . . . you are brave and you are fearless.'' ``We both are,'' Louise agrees. A seamless offering, this will both touch and tickle little ones. Henkes packs plenty of appeal into his watercolors outlined in pen and ink and coaxes maximum expressions from the thin lines and dots that serve as the mice's features.
