Horn Book Review
Mother, Father, Ben, and Becky Beaver spend their time happily splashing around. When a storm threatens to destroy their lodge, their resourcefulness and willingness to work together pulls them through+although Kuiper doesn't stoop to saying this. The book's other main pleasure is its textured images of the not-too-anthropomorphized beavers in action. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Booklist Review
PreS-Gr. 1. In this pleasant adventure, Father, Mother, Ben, and Becky Beaver play in the river all day, though they know they should be shoring up their lodge. When a sudden storm threatens their home, they all work to strengthen it with mud and branches. A tree blows onto Becky's flat tail, trapping her in the forest. Frightened, she hides under a pile of leaves until the others rescue her. The storm still rages and night falls, but when the sun rises again, the intrepid beavers find their lodge intact. Teachers can point out the morals of working together and using ingenuity, but children will enjoy the scenes of the beavers frolicking and the note that the animals' fun-first approach didn't lead to the destruction of their home. The artwork, which includes some lovely underwater views, depicts the cast in a series of appealing, softly colored full- and double-page scenes. --Carolyn Phelan Copyright 2004 Booklist
