Publisher's Weekly Review
A love-hate relationship develops between reporter Rafaella Holland and Caribbean-resort manager Marcus Devlin as Rafaella goes undercover to expose the gangster who seduced and abandoned her mother years before. ``A weak, tangled plot dims the shine of two fairly enjoyable sparring partners in this contrived novel of romantic suspense,'' said PW. Kirkus Review
A reporter makes time to investigate her precarious paternal roots--in another banal and unconvincing romantic adventure from Coulter (False Pretenses, 1988). Discovering her comatose mother's diaries, rich and beautiful journalist Rafaella Holland uncovers the truth of her conception--the spoiling of her helpless virgin mother by her deceitful, slippery, already married father, a man Rafaella has never met. Leaving her stepfather at home puzzling over the mysterious circumstances of her mother's injury, Rafaella jets to the Caribbean to assuage her mother's pain by getting the dirt on her estranged father. She poses lamely as his admiring potential biographer. And not only does daddy take the bait, but he takes her in, enabling Rafaella to document his crooked arms-dealing with Iran. While pumping for information, she also finds herself engaged in steamy beach sex with Marcus O'Sullivan, an island thug with secrets of his own. As Rafaella uses her prowess in martial arts to fend off several near-misses with deadly snakes and a sabotaged helicopter, she drop-kicks, back-flips, and karate-chops her way into her father's inner sanctum of greed. Finally, in a desperately bungled attempt at a James Bondian finale, Rafaella avenges her mother's past--and embarks on a romantic beginning of her own. An Electra complex gone awry, this daughter's exuberant search for her father fumbles amateurishly toward the finish line. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
Booklist Review
When Rafaella Holland discovers how her real father, Dominick Giovanni, tormented her mother years ago, she decides to take revenge. On his exclusive Caribbean island, she meets Marcus Devlin, an undercover agent. Strongly attracted to each other but full of secrets, they try to sort out their feelings without revealing their intentions to Dominick. This convoluted plot ranges over the Caribbean, Europe, and New England, drawing a wide range of players into double crosses, intrigue, and plenty of romance. Coulter once again proves why she has been dubbed the queen of romance. Impulse gives us dashing men, beautiful women, sex, intrigue, and international high stakes. It is a thoroughly enjoyable adventure and should be in demand. --Jill Sidoti
Library Journal Review
In an attempt to find personal and professional fulfillment, Melinda LeBlanc returns to her New England hometown of Harrow. Having moved to California upon graduation from high school, she has come back to work in her cousin's florist shop designing arrangements for weddings, funerals, and other occasions. Many of her former schoolmates have gone on to college and gotten married. Sensing that they look down on her both socially and educationally, Melinda has no desire to continue friendships with them. She renews acquaintances with Libby and Dennis, also former classmates and unattached. Melinda also establishes other liaisons, which are not developing into anything lasting. It is easy to sympathize with this thirtyish single woman looking for a permanent relationship. But it seems that sometimes she is the victim of her own cynicism and overly critical and independent attitude. In her portrayal, reader Vida Vasaitis has captured this cynicism; her characterizations of the other players are also very well done. Recommended for public and academic women's fiction collections.
