When Wendy Harper inherits her family's beachside cottage in Seaside, Maine, she sees it as a way to finally pay off the debts that have mounted since her husband died. But before it can be sold, the neglected property must be renovated. She and her 12-year-old son Jackson move in--temporarily, she reminds him--in order to do the work themselves, even though Christmas is coming. The charming town, along with local craftsman Caleb Colton, pulls on both Wendy and Jackson, who even registers himself for school in a bid to get his mom to move them there permanently. Wendy knows that the most responsible thing to do is to sell the cottage and return to Ohio, but the lure of the sea is hard to resist.

Author Notes

Melody Carlson was born in San Francisco, California on March 2, 1956. She graduated from Lane Community College. Before becoming a Christian author, she volunteered in teen ministry, taught preschool, and worked briefly in interior design and in international adoption. She has written over 200 books for children, pre-teens, young adults, and adults including Revell, Finding Alice, The Christmas Bus, the Diary of a Teenage Girl series, and the Carter House Girls series.

Carlson (Harbor Secrets) explores the quiet town of Seaside, Maine, in this heartfelt Christmas story. Wendy Harper and her son, Jackson, drive along the coastal shores of Maine toward the Seaside beach house her grandfather left her. While she has every intention of fixing up the cottage and preparing it for sale, Jackson is under the impression that this is a permanent move for the family. No matter how many times she tries, Wendy is unable to tell Jackson that they won't be staying. With the constant pull between hope and doubt, Wendy is no longer sure if selling the beach house is the answer to her problems. Through year-round residents such as handsome Caleb Colton, Wendy is able to see the possibilities that will open up if she were to stay in Seaside. Jackson encourages his mom to trust God for what they need, and believes Seaside is the right place for them. Though she tries to make life in Seaside work, she ultimately decides to make the responsible decision. With a sweet ending that neatly wraps up this Christmas novel, Carlson explores second chances through the touch-ups of a small beach house, a budding romance, and a renewal of faith in God.
