Booklist Review

This is Rogers' tie-in novel for the game Quantum Break by Remedy Entertainment and, as game cowriter Sam Lake describes it in the foreword, an alternate timeline novel. Playing or knowing the game isn't a prerequisite, but those who do may enjoy the novel as a way of seeing the game's events unfurl along a different path. The story follows Jack Joyce, a reporter recently returned to his hometown of Riverport. Joyce becomes involved in a conflict with the sinister Monarch Corporation over a potentially doomed universe after an accident involving a time machine while he also deals with his shifting relations with his brother and time travel discoverer, William; his childhood friend, Paul Serene; and his mysterious former girlfriend, Zed. Rogers handles the novel's time travel can never change history logic well, at the same time writing evocative action sequences and developing the complicated relationships between Jack, his family, and his friends.
