Choice Review
Among the numerous dictionaries of architectural terms, this is one of the few that focuses on preservation. Others (e.g., Carl R. Lounsbury's Illustrated Glossary of Early Southern Architecture and Landscape, CH, Jun'94) offer hundreds of terms useful to preservationists but are not limited to such terms. Intended to define specialized terms used in preservation in the US and Canada that allow recorders to describe historic resources fully, this dictionary focuses on structures, sites, and objects rather than persons, tools, and processes. The types of buildings included are generally limited to those in use before WW II, and building terms are limited to those known to have been used in North America regardless of the original source of the word. Only current preservation usage is defined. Definitions are concise and cross-references are plentiful. Line drawings to illustrate terms are excellent, although with 10,000 entries the 400 drawings are too few. Bucher, a restoration architect, has compiled a useful source that should be acquired by all collections serving programs in architecture, preservation, history, or American studies. S. M.
