Abstract:
Contains an account of Lane's trip across the Plains from Fort Leavenworth to Oregon in the winter of 1848, discusses his work in the establishment of the Territorial government, his journey with Newell and an interpreter into Cayuse country, the arrest and trial of the Whitman murderers, and the treaties made and councils held with various Northwest Indian tribes.
