Author Notes

Author and illustrator, Marc Brown was born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1946. He attended the Cleveland Institute of Art. After college, he worked numerous odd jobs before he began his career.

He is most renown for creating the Arthur series. The idea for Arthur, the aardvark came one night while telling his son a bedtime story. The first title in the series was "Arthur's Nose" written in 1976. Since then, Brown has written over thirty books in the Arthur Adventure series. D. W., Arthur's sister was another character created by Brown. In addition to writing, Brown also developed the Arthur television series on PBS.

Arthur falls prey to the wiles of television commercials and works hard to earn money for a Treat Timer for his dog, Pal. Predictably, the gadget malfunctions, yet a disappointed Arthur soon recovers his interest in commercials. Ages 4^-7. After a television ad convinces Arthur that his puppy, Pal, needs a Treat Timer to dispense dog biscuits, he finds that he can think of little else. Arthur works to earn the $19.95 (nonrefundable), then buys the Treat Timer (some assembly required), but its lights, noises, and rocketing treats frighten Pal. The money's gone, the gadget's a dud, and Arthur's learned his lesson--or has he? At any rate, this amusing picture book will give parents a good lead into discussions of "truth in advertising." Arthur's fans will enjoy the humor of his predicament and the edgy interplay between Arthur and his sister D. W.
