Library Journal Review
Both of these charming Sherlock Holmes productions feature Jeremy Brett, touted by some as the Holmes. Regardless of whether you agree, his performances are quite good, and Edward Hardwicke complements him nicely as Dr. Watson. The scenery is dark and wonderful. If contemporary audiences were forced to lodge a complaint, it would probably relate to the pacing. But for those interested in seeing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works on the big (or not-so-big) screen, part of the beauty here is in the suspense of experiencing the stories as they unfold. The only special DVD feature is a gallery of drawings created by Sidney Paget for Hound and Howard K. Elcock for Vampyre. The quality and convenience of the DVD format make it a better choice than VHS, despite the relative dearth of special features. Recommended for public libraries. [Other Holmes DVDs from MPI starring Brett and Hardwicke include The Eligible Bachelor, The Sign of Four, and The Master Blackmailer.-Ed.]-Daniel B.
