Ta-Nehisi Coates was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 30, 1975. He attended Howard University. He is a correspondent at The Atlantic, where he writes about culture, politics, and social issues. He is the author of The Beautiful Struggle and Between the World and Me, which won a National Book Award for nonfiction in 2015 and the 2016 PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay. He was included on Time magazine's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

King T'challa, the Black Panther of Wakanda, presides over a nation under siege. Insurgents called the People sow dissent as their compatriot, the inventor Ezekiel Stane, employs high-tech terrorism. A pair of former royal guards, the Midnight Angels, pursue their own agenda, even as the king seeks a way to revive his fallen sister. Coates imbues a literate, thoughtful, and highly relevant spin to this series populated exclusively by powerful and compelling black characters. What he does not imbue it with, however, is a great deal of excitement. Fractured by so many plot threads and scene changes, the story struggles to gain momentum and the sparse action scenes are rendered inert by dense dialogue and occasionally ponderous philosophizing, which not even the appearances of Luke Cage, Storm, and Misty Knight can alleviate. More functional as a slow-burning political thriller, it is well served by penetrating deeper into the Black Panther's psyche than in volume 1 and by Sprouse's luminous, gorgeous art, making the imaginary Wakanda and its people a joy to see.--Karp, Jesse Copyright 2017 Booklist
