From living on the ranch to life on the trail, this dictionary focuses on the life of cowboys. How was cowboy clothing practical for the work done by cowboys? How were western homes built? Which buildings were part of a ranch? This book also looks at topics associated with western settlers, boomtowns, and the gold rush.

Author Notes

Bobbie Kalman was born in Hungary in 1947. She escaped with her family to Austria during the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. The family spent several weeks there as refugees before immigrating to North America. Her book, Refugee Child, is based on this account. She has degrees in English, psychology and education, and has taught at both the elementary and secondary level. She has also worked as an educational assistant for several publishing companies. She is the author and publisher of over 800 books for children. Her books are sought after because she writes within specific curriculum needs, making the titles very popular in schools and public libraries. Her works include The Early Settler Life series, The Historic Communities series, The Native Nations of North America series, The Lands, Peoples, and Cultures series, and The Science of Living Things series.

Gr 3-5-These titles are derived from former titles by the author including the "Historic Communities," "Life in the Old West," "Colonial People," and "Native Nations of North America" series (all Crabtree). Each volume is divided into 15 chapter spreads that vary widely but generally focus on aspects of daily life, including clothing, food, homes, and work and other activities. The treatments are cursory, particularly in Native Communities, which attempts to cover the entire North American continent. Each spread has an introductory paragraph and includes an assortment of small and spot illustrations. Terms are defined in paragraphs or in captions accompanying the many color drawings. Labeling these titles as dictionaries is somewhat deceptive. Owners of the earlier series won't need them, and others should consider North American Indian (DK, 2005), Joy Masoff's Colonial Times (Scholastic, 2000), and titles from Sally Senzell Isaacs's "Picture the Past" series (Heinemann Library) instead.-Carol S.
