Abandoned by his father when he was a child in Mexico, Manny Ortega makes his way to Texas for work to support his family. He forms an unlikely father-son bond with his American employer, crusty Owen Green, who runs the Eden Plain cattle ranch. But Manny's illusions about Owen are shattered when his relationship with Owen's college-educated daughter, Chaney, turns romantic. In gritty, down-to-earth prose, Smith (A Bigger Life) addresses issues of racism and class discrimination even among people of faith. This smart novel asks the question many would be afraid to answer: What if it were your daughter? A great book club discussion choice, this is highly recommended for all collections.
