Author Notes

Clive Cussler was born in Aurora, Illinois on July 15, 1931. He attended Pasadena City College for two years before enlisting in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After his discharge from the military, he worked first as a copywriter and later as a creative director for two of the nation's most successful advertising agencies. At that time, he wrote and produced radio and television commercials that won numerous international awards, including one at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

He began writing in 1965 and published his first novel featuring Dirk Pitt in 1973. His first non-fiction work, The Sea Hunters, was published in 1996. He has written over 50 books including the Dirk Pitt series, the NUMA Files series, Oregon Files series, Isaac Bell series, and the Fargo Adventure series.

He is the Chairman of NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency), a non-profit group which he founded. He and his crew of marine experts and NUMA volunteers have discovered over 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites.

Bestsellers Cussler and Burcell's refreshing 10th Sam and Remi Fargo adventure (after 2017's The Romanov Ransom) benefits from a clever flashback device. In 1906, Isaac Bell, the hero of the Cussler series featuring the men and women of the Van Dorn Detective Agency, apprehends a group of thieves who have stolen $1 million and a prototype Rolls Royce known as the Gray Ghost. In the present day, the same car is again stolen, and treasure hunters Sam and Remi agree to search for the immensely valuable car for two reasons: this sort of offbeat case is catnip to the Fargos, and the owner, Albert Payton, the seventh Viscount Wellswick, happens to be a distant relative of Sam's. Many of the clues to the Fargo investigation are found in a close reading of a journal kept by Albert's grandfather, the fifth viscount, detailing Bell's exciting 1906 case. The 10th and latest Sam and Remi Fargo adventure (The Romanov Ransom, 2017, etc.) is a fast-paced tale that reaches back to the early days of automotive glory.In Manchester, England, in 1906, the Gray Ghost has gone missing. That's the Rolls-Royce prototype developed by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, and the loss threatens to financially ruin them. They hire a detective to locate it, but he is murdered. In the present day, Sam and Remi Fargo hear about the car, which turned up after World War II but is now missing again. It's always been owned by the Payton family, which generations ago was the Oren-Payton family, and may be worth many millions of dollars. Raising the stakes even higher, the 1906 thieves may have hidden treasure inside the car, though there was no trace of it when the Gray Ghost was found after the war. But jealous modern-day cousin Arthur Oren has the car stolen and then loses track of ithas the thief he hired stolen it twice? It's a complicated and clever plot, with Sam and Remi trying to find it for the current owner, Lord Albert Payton, Viscount Wellswick. The 1906 journal of Jonathon Payton, fifth Viscount Wellswick, provides a solid backstory. The Fargos are great series characters, whip-smart and altruistic self-made multimillionaires who can afford to take time from their charity work to dabble in dangerous adventures. Oren knows they're involved, and he wants them both dead and the car returned. An accomplice suggests first making the Fargos destitute by freezing their bank accounts and credit cards. Then the bad guys can arrange a fake suicide. It's fun to watch Sam and Remi get out of dicey scrapes, once by driving an Ahrens-Fox pumper fire engine out of a blazing building. Oren asks, "How hard is it to knock off two socialites?" He finds out the hard way; he should have just acquainted himself with Cussler's series.Thriller fans will delight in this latest escapade. Isaac Bell, Cussler's early-twentieth-century investigator, makes a guest appearance via flashback in the latest novel featuring globetrotting adventurers Sam and Remi Fargo. In 1906, a prototype automobile is stolen; Isaac Bell, of the Van Dorn Agency, recovers the vehicle but is unable to prove that the alleged thief has been unfairly accused. In the present day, the accused man's grandson asks the Fargos to prove, once and for all, that his grandfather was innocent. But here's the thing: the car is missing (again), and even more troubling the vehicle contains something so powerful and dangerous that millions of lives could be at stake. As the Fargos soon discover, there is yet another wrinkle: there are people who want the object for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.
