School Library Journal Review
PreS-Gr 2-An anthology of 10 classic stories such as "The Princess and the Pea," "The Three Little Pigs," and "The Frog Prince," loosely adapted and retold to feature Arthur, D.W., Buster, Francine, and the rest of the gang. Each story highlights elements of the starring character's famous personality. In "Little Red Riding Hood," D.W. says to the wolf disguised as her grandmother, "Oh, Grandma Thora!...What big teeth you have-and I'm not sure you've been brushing regularly." The book's oversized format and trademark artwork make it easy to use for bedtime sharing. Children will love to hear these versions of the familiar stories with these ever-popular characters who add their own special humor and fun. Libraries can't go wrong with this newest edition to the Arthur canon.-Kimberlie Monteforte, Lucius Beebe Memorial Library, Wakefield, MA (c) Copyright 2010. Horn Book Review
Ten folktales including The Three Little Pigs and Puss in Boots star Arthur and his friends and family. Although they feature familiar, well-loved characters, these tales have been sanitized and are much tamer than the traditional stories--the Emperor wears boxer shorts under his new clothes, there is no mention of what the hunter does with the wolf in Red Riding Hood--and the morals take center stage. Better to stick with more faithful and familiar retellings. From HORN BOOK Spring 1999, (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
