Karen White was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She attended college at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Management.

Her first book, In the Shadow of the Moon was a double finalist for the Romance Writers of America RITA Award. The Girl on Legare Street hit The New York Times Best Seller list in November 2009, and On Folly Beach in May 2010, which was also a NYT bestseller. Most of White's novels are based in the low-country of the southeastern United States. Some of her other titles include: The House on Tradd Street, The Lost Hours and The Memory of Water. Her title's Sea Change, The Time Between and The Sound of Glass made the New York Times Best Seller List.

By the light of a crescent moon, Suzanne Paris spies through her bus window a opossum. Her eyes riveted, she wonders if the creature, like her, will simply wait for the next catastrophe. Or could she, for once, stop hiding. Abruptly, Suzanne gets off the Atlanta-bound bus to find herself in Walton, Ga. There's no better place to hide than this rural town. No one, not even her frightening ex-fiance, will find her here. Yet, everyone she meets wants to know where she's from and where she got the unusual charm around her neck. Walton turns out to be populated with warm characters who have no intention of letting her slip under the radar. There's Miss Lena, who seems to recognize Suzanne, even though Suzanne's rough childhood, bouncing between foster homes and an alcoholic mother, never brought her to Walton. There's Lucinda, who seems to recognize Suzanne's wariness and hires her to help with her lingerie store. Most importantly, there's Joe, Lucinda's widowed nephew-in-law. Father of six, high school teacher, football coach, incumbent mayor--Joe seems impossibly good. A woman with secrets, Suzanne seems like a walking bad decision. Luckily, Joe's eldest daughter, Maddie, begins to connect the two destined lovers. Like Suzanne, Maddie lost her mother at 14 and has a talent for photography. Soon, Suzanne is tutoring Maddie, baby-sitting Joe's younger kids and becoming inextricably woven into the fabric of his life. Enter the villain: Stinky Harden, Joe's competition in the mayoral race and Suzanne's nemesis as he determines to discover her secret and use it to discredit Joe. Suzanne Paris is a freelance photographer on the run from an abusive ex-fiance when she unexpectedly lands in tiny Walton, Georgia, in White's distinctively southern follow-up to Falling Home (2002). Uncertain about her future, Suzanne means to stop only briefly. Yet she is immediately sucked in by the homey warmth and personal stories of the townsfolk, particularly seemingly stern mayor Joe Warner and his six motherless children. Taken in by Joe's well-meaning family and neighbors, Suzanne slowly begins to relax. Yet the sexual tension between her and Joe, who has made it clear from the start that he does not entirely approve of her for some reason, adds a pleasant seesawing to Suzanne's days. Toss in a mystery about her mother's locket, the ever-present threat of her ex catching up with her, and Suzanne's struggle to avoid the ghosts of her past despite needing to lay them to rest, and the story line sweetly compels.
