Author Notes

Though many modern scholars dispute his existence, Aesop's life was chronicled by first century Greek historians who wrote that Aesop, or Aethiop, was born into Greek slavery in 620 B.C. Freed because of his wit and wisdom, Aesop supposedly traveled throughout Greece and was employed at various times by the governments of Athens and Corinth.

Some of Aesop's most recognized fables are The Tortoise and the Hare, The Fox and the Grapes, and The Ant and the Grasshopper. His simple but effective morals are widely used and illustrated for children. (Bowker Author Biography)

Gr 1 Up With its oversized format, large lettering, expressive illustrations, and eloquent writing style, this collection of 24 of Aesop's animal fables is a delight for both the eye and the ear. Familiar characters such as ``The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing'' and ``The Lion and the Mouse'' are included, along with lesser-known goats, crabs, and frogs. The text for each fable is taken from ``an excellent classic translation'' which is unidentified. The rather formal writing style succinctly conveys the meaning of each fable and enhances the spirit of Santore's full-color ink-and-wash paintings. The illustrations share a hyper-realistic style, careful detailing, and often a twisted perspective, yet the mood and color palette of each is distinct. The paintings are so forceful and possess such a velocity of movement that very young children may be frightened, but an older audience will relish the realistic detailing. In the illustrations for the last fable, ``The Hare and the Tortoise,'' the characters from all of the preceeding fables gather at the finish line to cheer on the contestants. Gr. 3-5. An ambitiously illustrated collection of 24 fables, this oversize volume fits the coffee- table book genre. Each concisely told offering is accompanied by a large, dramatic illustration, and as far as children are concerned, the art will carry as much weight as the stories. Santore's slick style is literal and dramatic. His animal characters have a compelling intensity whether they are villains or victims, and their forceful presence dominates the pages. Included are familiar standbys (``The Fox and the Grapes,'' ``The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse'') as well as lesser-known selections; some, ``The Ox and the Frog'' and ``The Crab and His Mother,'' for example, contain morals that will need adult interpretation. A handsome collection that may prove popular, especially after using the large pictures in story hours. DMW.
