Marissa Moss (born September 29, 1959, Jeannette, Pennsylvania) is an American children's book author. Moss's work spans the many ages of a child. She started her first career making picture books. Amelia's Notebook was her first deviation from that format. This book is the format of a journal or diary and is penned in a black and white composition notebook. Moss herself says that she loves this format that she stumbled upon because it allows her to explore the world through a child's eyes. In fact, she says, "The things that happened to Amelia really happened to me--from the fire in the school to the marshmallows on the ceiling -- though the names have been changed because my sister is mad enough at me already!" Earlier in her career Marissa Moss wrote and illustrated several children's books not in journal format.

Summary:

Summary

Amelia's notebooks entertain readers with great stories about the ups and downs of growing up, told from the perspective of an inquisitive, insightful 10-year-old girl. What's more, her witty words and whimsical doodles encourage girls to express their creativity by drawing and writing about their own lives.

Amelia hasn't seen her father since she was a baby. Now he's back in her -- life and he has invited Amelia to visit him and his new family. The difficulties and dramas of their reunion are sweetened by comic relief as Amelia learns how to care for and communicate with her new baby brother.

Author Notes

Marissa Moss began as an illustrator of children's books. She is the author and illustrator of the Amelia series. She has written and illustrated more than 20 children's books including Amelia's Notebook, which was named a 1997 American Booksellers Association Pick of the Lists book. Her other books include Regina's Big Mistake and Knick Knack Paddywack.

My Notebook (with Help from Amelia) also won the 2000 Parent Council Outstanding Award Informational and Oh Boy, Amelia! won the 2001 Parent's Guide to Children's Media Award and the 2002 Children's Choice Award.

Gr 3-5-Amelia and her notebook are back. She has finally written to her father, whom she has never met, and received a reply asking her to come meet him, her stepmother, and her half-brother at their home in Chicago. This is a big step for any child, but Amelia, feisty as ever, takes the plunge. She predictably loves baby George, hates Clara, and is unsure about her father until he finally says he's loved her all along. However, Moss does not candy coat the situation; she allows Amelia to voice her insecurities about what it means to have a father, to be angry at Clara for reading her notebook, to feel uncute in comparison to George, and even to think her dad's hairy hands are gross. The author once again has her finger on the pulse of her audience, who will appreciate Amelia's honest expression of her feelings. Horn Book Review

Amelia, age ten, reconnects with her father, who left when she was a baby. Visiting him in Chicago, Amelia packs her bag to go home after her stepmother reads Amelia's private notebook. Her father convinces Amelia to stay and also that the divorce was not her fault. Gr. 3^-5. In the latest volume of the Amelia's Notebook series, Amelia records her experiences and feelings when she receives a letter from her father (who divorced her mother and left when she was a baby) and visits him in Chicago. Amelia's adjustment to her father and stepmother is realistically portrayed, with the good intentions, false starts, and awkwardness inherent in the situation. Toward the end of the visit, Amelia is able to ask her father the questions she's been asking herself for years and hear answers that begin to heal the hurt that her father's absence and silence caused. Jaunty ink-and-watercolor illustrations, purportedly Amelia's work, decorate every page of this highly readable book. The voice is consistently Amelia's, but the points of view of other characters, from her sister to her stepmother, come through as well. A fine addition to a popular series. --Carolyn Phelan
