Summary
She couldn't stop it.Not then.Not now.
If she'd only turned her head, she would have seen the car containing her daughter, struggling to get out. Struggling to escape her kidnapper.
Despite all her years determining the fates of families, veteran family court judge Hope Willis couldn't save her own. Now she's frantically grasping at any hope for Krissy's rescue. Her husband dead-set against it, she calls Casey Woods and her team of renegade investigators,Forensic Instincts.
A behaviorist.A techno-wizard.An intuitive.A former Navy SEAL. Unconventional operatives. All with unique talents and personal reasons for being part of Casey's group, they'll do whatever it takes.
Able to accurately read people after the briefest of encounters, Casey leads her crew to Krissy's home. There, she picks up the signs of a nervous spouse, a guilty conscience, a nanny that hides on her cell. She watches as secrets beg to creep into the open.
Forensic Instincts will dig through each tiny clue and eliminate the clutter. But time is running out, and even working around the clock, the authorities are bound by the legal system. Not so Casey's team. For they know that the difference between Krissy coming back alive and disappearing forever could be as small as a suspect's rapid breathing, or as deep as Hope's dark family history.

Publisher's Weekly Review
At the outset of this exciting if pat thriller from Kane (Dark Room), White Plains, N.Y., family court judge Hope Willis is not only terrified by the kidnapping of her five-year-old daughter, Krissy, but also devastated, because the crime is identical to the kidnapping of Hope's twin sister 32 years earlier. To find Krissy before the unthinkable happens, Willis hires Forensic Instincts, a crack investigation firm whose private status allows its members to get around procedures that those in law enforcement have to adhere to-like warrants. Led by profiler Casey Woods, the Forensic Instincts team barrels into a snarl of suspects, secrets, and conspiracies. Smooth prose and engaging characters help offset some fairly obvious plot twists, a few of which stretch credibility to the breaking point. Also somewhat unbelievable are the near-infallible skills of Forensic Instincts' members and the willingness of dozens of police officers and FBI agents to let the team skirt legal boundaries repeatedly with no more than a harsh word or two of censure. Booklist Review
The unthinkable has happened to Judge Hope Willis: her young daughter, Krissy, has been kidnapped. Hope has lived through a kidnapping before, when her twin sister was taken and never returned. She knows law enforcement will do everything possible, but she wants more, so she calls Forensic Instincts. This is Casey Woods' brainchild, a team of handpicked experts with the skill set to get results without worrying about the legalities. Casey begins at the judge's home, where flags come up as she observes the judge's husband and the nanny. Why was Krissy taken? The team knows that they must work fast to bring Krissy back. As the lives of the Willis family are dissected, many scenarios and suspects seem possible: someone from court, the judge's fired assistant, clients from her husband's law firm. Or is this case connected to the disappearance of Hope's sister? Kane highlights each of the team's fortes as they race against the clock to bring the little girl back in this well-crafted, fast-paced suspense thriller, which leaves the door open for more Forensic Instincts adventures.--Engelmann, Patt. Library Journal Review
When Judge Hope Willis's daughter, Krissy, is kidnapped, it stirs up the past trauma of the kidnapping of Hope's twin sister, Felicity, when they were six years old. Felicity was never found, and the thought that this crime could happen a second time devastates Hope. Despite her husband's opposition, Hope calls in a private investigative team, Forensic Insights, led by Casey Woods, a skilled profiler who chooses to work outside the margins of the law. This leads to conflict with Casey's boyfriend, who heads the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, also working the case. Kane, a prolific author of historical romance and romantic suspense (Drawn in Blood), has delivered another page-turner and seems to be setting the stage for a new series. Verdict This well-written tale of romantic suspense, with its strong characters, will appeal to fans of Iris Johansen, Linda Howard, and Joy Fielding.-Beth Blakesley, Washington State Univ.
