Summary

Challenging "searches" and rhyming hints promote concentration and counting skills.

Like its companion book, I Spy ABC , this colorful 1-2-3 book is hiding a delightful clutter of toys, candies, foods, dolls, natural items and much more. Searching while learning the numbers -- as well as colors, counting, vocabulary, memory and attention -- is an entertaining pastime of surprise and achievement.

On each number page are short rhyming verses setting the reader's task to find specific items and providing hints of where those might be found. But of course, there are hundreds more items which are not hinted at, so the challenge and fun are endless.

The answers to the rhymes -- where is the item mentioned? -- are at the back of the book. This is a great book for sharing, alone time and bedtime.

Author Notes

Manuela Ancutici is a graphic designer with a special talent for the beauty in detail. To make this book and its companion I Spy ABC , she searched flea markets, with an eye for pretty, crazy combinations of items to find the material for this book.

Ulrike Sauerhöfer studied graphic design and has worked as an art director in various advertising agencies. For many years she has worked as an editor and author for various publishing houses.

In a striking seek-and-find book, Ancutici meticulously organizes toys, currency, puppets, sweets, and more into the shapes of numbers one through 20 as Sauerhöfer's accompanying text invites readers to find specific objects hidden within each image. The photographed numerals consist of items organized by color or theme: "3" is made up entirely of marbles and small rubber balls, and an assortment of tiny green toys create a "4" on the facing page. Numerous name-brand objects are tucked into the spreads (Disney and Pokémon characters, Lego figurines, etc.) and occasionally mentioned in the text ("Superman completes your search!"). Though the text can be flat and/or awkward ("Two crows are still hidden here, you'll find them, do not worry"), Ancutici's intricately assembled images captivate. Available simultaneously: I Spy ABC.
