Summary

Summary

George and Harold are up to their old tricks again, and when their latest prank makes a direct hit on school brainiac Melvin Sneedly, he decides to get even! But in the blink of an eye -- and the sneeze of a nose -- Melvin goes from snooty to snotty, and the Bionic Booger Boy is born! Can Captain Underpants clean up this catastrophe, or will the mucous monster make a mess of things?

Author Notes

Dav Pilkey was born on March 4th, 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio. His father was a steel salesman, and his mother was the organist at a local church.

In 1984, Pilkey attended Kent State University as an art major. One of Pilkey's freshman English professors complimented him on his creative writing skills, and encouraged him to write books, which launched him into his career. He found out about a contest for students who write and illustrate their own books, with the winners earning the prize of publication. Pilkey began creating his first book, "World War Won," and entered it in The National Written and Illustrated By...Awards Contest for Students. Pilkey won the contest and flew to Kansas City, Missouri to meet the editors and publishers at Landmark Editions, Inc.

Soon after the publication of World War Won, Dav moved back to Kent, Ohio where he had gone to college. In 1997, Pilkey won the Caldecott Honor for his book "The Paperboy" but is perhaps better known for his "Captain Underpants" series, which he had created while still in elementary school. His title Super Diaper Baby 2: The Invasion of the Potty Snatchers made Publisher's Weekly best seller list for 2011. His title's, The Adventures of Captain Underpants and Dog Man Unleashed, made The New York Times Best Seller List.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 2-4-Fourth-graders George and Harold are good at pranks involving ketchup on toilet seats; saving the planet from the "nasty forces of unrelenting evil"; and making fun of Melvin Sneedly, the school brainiac and tattletale. When his robot-making hobby backfires during a class demonstration, Melvin tries to transform himself into a bionic superboy to get back at the pair but ends up as Bionic Booger Boy instead. Chaos ensues after he accidentally doubles and triples in size. George and Harold call on Captain Underpants (the school principal), but he loses his powers when he is covered in saliva. When a bionic hamster hears the terrified cries of his two friends, he comes to the rescue. The typical Pilkey ending leaves the door open for a sequel, and the novel is filled with the familiar comic-book inserts, Flip-O-Rama animations, and black-and-white cartoon illustrations. Fans will love this installment, and the book would probably appeal to slow readers. Adults are likely to be turned off by the use of the words "idiot" and "dumb" to refer to children and by the graphic description of snot. Publisher's Weekly Review

Horn Book Review

Having already battled beings from Venus and Mercury, a mouse and his robot now wage war against yet another group of aliens who want to take over Earth. Cartoonlike drawings overwhelm an extremely slight story in what is essentially a comic book in hardcover. A section of flip-book action and instructions for drawing Ricky, his robot, and some of the aliens are included. From HORN BOOK Spring 2004, (c) Copyright 2010.
