Summary
In a quirky, clever, and heartwarming picture book from the beloved author of Henny , Peddles the pig is on a mission to make his dreams come true with the help of his porcine pals.
Peddles is tired of being the same old pig--he wants to be different.
He wants to stop doing the usual pig things like oinking and sleeping. He'd much rather stand, climb, and dance! And Peddles finally gets his chance when he bumps into a pile of shoes and finds a pair of red boots that fits just right! But as soon as Peddles tries them on, he falls on his back and can't get up! Until his special friends come along and show him how to make his dreams come true!
Author Notes
Elizabeth Rose Stanton began her picture book writing and illustrating adventure a few years ago, after a brief career as an architect, and long career as a parent and fine artist. Her debut book, Henny , was awarded an American Library Association Booklist star and was named as one of the best books of 2014 for children by The New York Public Library. School Library Journal called her second book, Peddles , "quietly wonderful," and the illustrations, "a thing of beauty." Elizabeth grew up in New York and now lives in Seattle with her husband and a trio of Scottish Fold cats.

School Library Journal Review
PreS-K-Peddles is a pig with a sweetly inquisitive, alert expression and lots of big ideas. He's always thinking, even when he's eating, sleeping, or pooping. But it's his dreams that really set him apart from others of his kind. The pigs tell him to get his head out of the clouds and to stop being so spacey. One starry lavender night, he overhears a barn dance and knows what he has to do. Dancing doesn't come naturally, but with patience, persistence, and a little help from his friends, Peddles brings his dream to fruition. Young readers will find his gentle drama quietly wonderful, and Stanton's lovely pencil and watercolor illustrations are a thing of beauty (especially Peddles's red cowboy boots). VERDICT Peddles should find a cozy place in most picture book collections.-Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NY © Copyright 2016. Publisher's Weekly Review
Stanton follows Henny with another gently funny tale of a barnyard outsider. Peddles, a pale pink pig, dreams of bringing civilization to his brethren. Stanton draws vignettes of the other pigs "grunting and rooting and wallowing and." (you guessed it-pooping, graphically). Peddles "thought about the usual pig things differently," writes Stanton as she shows him fantasizing about speaking actual words ("Howdy!"), bathing in a tub, and sitting on a toilet with a newspaper. The sight of a hoedown gives Peddles a new idea-he wants to dance! His attempts to walk in a pair of discarded cowboy boots might have led his fellow pigs to make fun of him. Instead, they help him stand, then try on some footwear of their own. Peddles is an eccentric, but he can also be understood as a stand-in for a child starting down the road toward adulthood, trying on big shoes and dreaming about doing grown-up things. He's easy to love, and his porcine companions seem like the nicest of friends-even if they aren't toilet-trained. Ages 4-8. Agent: Joanna Volpe, New Leaf Literary & Media. Horn Book Review
Watching a hoedown, Peddles--whose "big ideas" are dismissed by the other pigs--is inspired to dance. The red cowboy boots he finds don't impart skill, but his repeated efforts inspire the other pigs to help. Sitting amid generous white space, gently detailed watercolor and pencil vignettes of Peddles's ideas, both imagined and attempted, adds heart and humor to this different-thinking pig's story. Booklist Review
What's sweeter than a roly-poly pig rendered in pencil and watercolor? That same pig wearing wrinkly socks. Peddles the pig thinks outside the box: he wants pizza instead of scraps, dreams of toilets and bathtubs, and imagines flying and, ultimately, dancing! Stanton's illustrations, showing Peddles from all angles and in all (even some undignified) situations, create great affection for this porcine. Double-page spreads depict Peddles in action alongside his piggy cohorts and are interspersed with images of Peddles alone and dreaming, emphasizing his uniqueness. And when he finally finds an achievable dream dance! the language mimics the idea: He bumbled and lumbered and clattered. When things don't go as planned, our hero is sadly upended across the page, but with the help of his friends and some special boots, he is back on his feet and in good company. Pair with Mo Willems' Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed (2009) for another story about an independent thinker who changes group mentality.--Ching, Edie Copyright 2015 Booklist
