School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-6-This book continues the adventures of 12-year-old Tom Elm, his raccoon pal, a former Veni Yan priest, three Bone explorers, and two smelly rat creatures as they attempt to save the world from the wicked dragon, the Nacht. The "Bone" books have a serious fan base, so this in-progress trilogy is bound to attract attention. Unfortunately, it falls short of expectations. While the Nacht, presented as a source of wickedness itself with the power to seep into and claim the minds of innocents, is legitimately creepy, the adventures feel haphazard and unplanned, characters remain largely undeveloped, and the humor feels a bit forced. However, the draw to the world created in the series is strong, and there are plenty of Smith's full-page illustrations to reinforce that connection. For real fans, this book is a solid pick, but the titles should be read in sequence-events in this one won't make sense without reading the first. It's time for Tom and his loyal band of human and non-human allies to stop the Nacht, an evil force that threatens the world. In this concluding novel, all of the pieces finally align to lead to a showdown between good and evil. Taut pacing, amiable characters, and a satisfying epilogue will satisfy Bone fans, though newbies will need some background. (c) Copyright 2013. The lovably motley questing crew returns for their final stand against the looming powers of the Nacht. Young turnip farmercum-hero Tom Elm has finally reached the arduous apex of his journey: The scattered pieces of the Spark are quickly coming together, as are all of the beings needed to complete his epic quest. A charmingly quirky assortment of dragons, animals, a warrior, Bones and a shape-shifting forest spirit must work together to save the fate of their world. They must keep the horrible dragon named the Nacht from taking over the realm and shrouding all they know in permanent, nightmarish blackness. This is no simple feat, and they must battle truly frightening foes on their way to the final showdown: a colony of possessed, bloodthirsty giant bats that have enslaved most of a human tribe. This final volume does not disappoint, twisting and turning rapidly to a wholly satisfyingalthough quickly resolvedconclusion. The Bone universe has smoothly spread out from a serialized graphic-novel epic to a thrill-ride prose trilogy, an accomplishment not often seen nor executed so well. Fear not, fans: A new Bone adventure is not-so-subtly hinted at as this installment draws to a close. Thrills, chills, twists and turns, this series ender offers it all. The franchise expansion of Jeff Smith's Bone-verse continues in this second prose novel set after the conclusion of his epic graphic-novel series. De facto quest leader, 12-year-old Tom Elm, proves his leadership mettle in a raid on a giant beehive to secure another piece of the relic known as the Spark, which, once assembled, will help drive back the Nacht, an evil dragon plaguing the Dreaming. Sniegoski continues his able balance of light slapstick humor mostly thanks to a couple of doltish Rat Creatures familiar fantasy elements, and a barest hint of urgency.
