Choice Review

This work is a reprint with updates of Warner's The Billboard Book of American Singing Groups: A History, 1940-1990, with most of the new material consisting of 20 entries on vocal groups of the 1990s. Organized by decade beginning with the 1940s, each of the six sections is alphabetically arranged. The approximately 350 entries are heavily weighted toward the 1950s and 1960s, with articles and discographies running one to five pages. The emphasis is on pop and rock groups, with occasional forays into jazz, folk, and gospel. No barbershop, bluegrass, or collegiate vocal groups are included. Virtually none of the entries from the earlier edition have been revised, although three rewrites are appended to the end of the book. Original entries were left unedited, with no see references to the new articles. An additional section on the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, established in 1997, provides a short history of the organization and a list of inductees. Not all groups inducted have entries in this volume, e.g., the Lennon Sisters and the Oak Ridge Boys. The original edition was a good book, but its flaws remain, including the omission of important groups (the Contours, the Roches), and discographies that lack Billboard chart positions. Most of the information here can be found elsewhere, although not at this low price. ^BSumming Up: Optional.
