Over the past decade, many aspects of managing electronic resources in libraries have been simplified as publishers, vendors, and libraries have begun to agree on standard contract terms and usage. But other issues have grown more complex as sellers find innovative ways to charge for, and limit access to, online information. The present volume updates the original iteration of TERMS (Techniques for Electronic Resource Management), which was introduced in 2008 and currently comprises six topics in the life cycle of an electronic resource in a library: investigation, acquisition, implementation/troubleshooting, evaluation, assessment, and preservation/sustainability. The authors devote a chapter, with subdivisions, to each of these. For example, the chapter on investigation considers requests, selection criteria, review form, analyses, trials, and final choice. There are methodologies for handling basic resources (where the decisions are straightforward), complex resources (which require more effort and thought due to complications of licensing/access/cost), and open access (where the costs are not as tangible, but still realized in staff time and effort). This detailed treatment of the process of managing electronic resources in libraries is required reading for librarians who purchase or support electronic resources.
