Choice Review

A book with an expansive title such as The Culture of Digital Scholarship in Academic Libraries could cover many topics. Among the topics addressed here are impact factors, building a data repository, and creating a lab that allows students to create digital scholarship by having the space and software together. The scope is so broad that defining the correct audience for the book is difficult. Roemer and Kern are at the University of Washington Libraries, as reflected by the majority of the data and examples. This is to say that the book will be useful for high-level research universities that, like the University of Washington, have long-established digital resources programs--for example, institutional repositories, open access support, data management support--and the personnel to work on finding more digital scholarship. The volume is unlikely to be useful to libraries that may be dealing with lack of funding, lack of administrative support, or few people to run the entire digital scholarship program.
