Description:
The photograph shows a mixed congregation of black and white adults and children and the Pastor, George W. White, on the front steps of St. Paul's African Methodist Episcopal Church in Salem. A sign on the front of the church reads "St. Pauls A.M.E. Church, Built March 1892, Salme (sic), Or." This photo may be the dedication of the new building. A small announcement in February 1892 in the Capital Journal said that construction had started on the Church, and that the congregation was about 20 people. There was an entry in the 1896 City Directory, but by 1902 (the next volume we have) it was gone, as was any entry for the Pastor, George W. White. The Church was in north Salem at Liberty and River Road.
