Summary

Summary

Fine Tunes' Hot Jazz & Dixieland: The Gold Collection is a pretty good sampling of 14 jazz classics, including cuts by the Original Dixieland Jass band ("Indiana"), the New Orleans Rhythm Kings ("Bugle Call Blues," "Tin Roof Blues," "Maple Leaf Rag"), King Oliver & His Dixie Syncopators ("Showboat Shuffle," "Willie the Weeper"), Louis Armstrong & His Hot Five ("Cornet Chop Suey," "Struttin' With Some Barbecue") and Bix Beiderbecke & the Wolverines ("Royal Garden Blues," "Tiger Rag"). These versions aren't necessarily the ones that are the most familiar, but they're pretty good and help make the disc an enjoyable purchase for the budget-minded. Be forewarned, however: the cover art is rather tasteless and may be viewed as a little racist by some. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
